I love your blogs. I found you through reading OPA’s list of artist by state. I don’t recall the date as I’ve been reading through older mags, Art of the West and Intl Artist. I pulled up your ‘struggle’ on YouTube only to find it no longer exists. How I love to see artist make mistakes so I can follow their thinking and even on Video to see HOW they correct the mistake.
Unfortunately, there were only two artists on the list for Louisiana. I live in DeRidder and we have a small gallery, RealArt Gallery. I am low on the intermediate level and wish we had teachers or workshops nearby. Need to know when they do appear in the state. I did attend William Schneider’s workshop in Baton Rouge, it was portraits and I do landscapes and still life, but my husband told me I’d eat SOMETHING from it…his encouragement came from him and his late wife having filmed three DVDs for him years ago so he could testify I would learn something and that started my journey in learning to see which I wish to further more education. I watch many DVDs from Liliedahl and Paint Brush, but I really need someone to be hands on with me in painting and drawing. So, when GOOD painters (oil) come to the state or even Texas (took one from Derrick Pence in Houston to try to loosen up a bit (but not sloppy), but still didn’t let go of my ‘tightness disease’! Make A Plan Before You Start
Making a plan before you start painting saves time - but sometimes you just get so excited that you just want to start painting! One of my biggest issues is sometimes I just start painting before I fully think it through - so WAY into the painting I will change my mind, see a problem I should have fixed before I started, etc. Every time I do this I remember that my plan was to PLAN first!! And, I always fix the issues but how much time have I wasted! Sometimes I find that the paintings that I don't like or take a long time to finish are specifically due to the planning process before I begin. This particular painting was so full of moss, underbrush, trees, limbs, vines, etc that I just got lost. I was so busy concentrating on the flowers in the garden with the grandmother that when I got to the trees and the moss I had to change a lot because it was just too busy. I am happy with the finished product but watch the video to see the struggle!
